Honouring Fred Sasakamoose. Legends live forever.
IN2R founder Aidan Anderson was asked by Fred Sasakamoose’s family to create and distribute an authorized tribute clothing line celebrating a hockey trailblazer, community builder and mentor whose impact reached far beyond the rink.
More than hockey
A barrier-breaker who kept giving back.
Fred Sasakamoose, from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, is widely recognized as the first treaty Indigenous player to reach the NHL. His 11 games with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1954 helped open a path for generations of Indigenous athletes who followed.
His greatest work came after professional hockey. Fred returned home and spent decades creating opportunities for young people through sport, community leadership, hockey development and advocacy. He used the game not simply to build players, but to build confidence, connection and stronger communities.
That is why his legacy cannot be measured by an NHL stat line. Fred’s impact lives in the people he encouraged, the doors he helped open and the belief he gave young athletes that they belonged at every level of the game.

The IN2R partnership
How the tribute came together.
The family reached out
Fred’s son, Neil Sasakamoose, approached Aidan Anderson and IN2R to create a legitimate tribute after unauthorized merchandise began appearing following Fred’s passing.
Aidan created the design
The authorized artwork was built around the words “Legends Live Forever,” a direct expression of Fred’s lasting place in hockey, Indigenous sport and Saskatchewan history.
The tribute gave back
Net proceeds from the limited tribute clothing were directed to Fred Sasakamoose Chief Thunderstick Sports Inc., supporting the organization and the hockey championship connected to Fred’s legacy.

Authenticity over opportunity
This was never meant to be generic memorial merchandise. It was a family-authorized collaboration built locally and handled with respect for Fred’s story.
Purpose behind the clothing
The Sasakamoose family connected with IN2R’s mission to challenge stigma around depression and anxiety and to use clothing as a starting point for honest conversation.
Sport as connection
Fred’s belief in sport as a way to strengthen young people and communities aligned naturally with IN2R’s belief that movement can help people reconnect, reset and move forward.
